Elephants

It was after 2.00pm today before we'd finished a quick lunch on the way to Kaudulla National Park (from Polonnaruwa). Kaudulla was part of an ancient water reservoir system created by one of Sri Lanka's kings - it was reconstructed in 1959 and now attracts and supports an amazing variety of plant and animal life - especially wild elephants!!

So today we were on a Jeep Safari!

In no time at all we had spotted amazing bird life (including peacocks and the Sri Lankan Junglefowl), monkeys and this little tortoise .........
... and then the ELEPHANTS .........

This one came closer and closer to our jeep .......

It started throwing grass and dirt over its back ........ and it eventually started rushing at our jeep, before our driver made a quick getaway

Feeling exhilarated and still excited by our first contact with these wonderful creatures in the wild we stopped for a photo break (minus the elephants) near the water reservoir ......

I am impersonating a pregnant elephant in my big dress (the breeze caught it!)
 Oh what a feeling!

Our guide and driver did a fantastic job in the National Park. It took excellent judgement to get so close to those elephants - yet stay safe. The tracks were pretty rough too!
One last look before it was time to go .......

A fabulous day in Polonnaruwa and the Kaudulla National Park!
